Hydrodynamics are important even with a full displacement hull such as Jenal's. If the bow thruster had been simply fitted with a round-ish hole each side we would have had reduced thruster power and drag on forward motion, as illustrated in Fig.1. Fig. 2 was our chosen design because this preferable shape would benefit both, as can be seen from Jenal's completed hull below.
