JENAL ~ Onboard Systems

Details of the steering system.

The original Klipper & Luxemotor (amongst several other types of barges) had these large rudders (right) that protruded above the waterline, following the curvaceous hull form and adding to the barges sexy (sort-of) lines. These are both vulnerable and unnecessary these days due to our more powerful engines. The NACA rudder on JENAL (left) is smaller and has the benefit of the DuoDrive propulsion to help flow water over the rudder.

This leads us on to the steering medium itself. Like most modern inboard engined craft we are opting for self-contained hydraulics. Hydrosta are supplying their twin ram system which eliminates the biased strain a single ram system generates on the steering shaft. The Hydrosta system uses the engines hydraulics to add power assistance to the system, making the steering-wheel leverage effort light enough for a smallish lady to manoeuvre the craft. Hydrosta mate the steering to Navman's GPS navigation system, offering JENAL the added benefit of auto-pilot helmanship.

We replaced the original specification traditional 36" wooden ships steering wheel with a 70cm stainless steel example from Aquafax

The change was bought about by a styling need to follow a stainless steel theme in the wheelhouse besides, with all this power assistance and size of wheel, steering leverage would not be a problem.
