Winter ~ 14/15

Cold winter-time is a great educator for heat retention. Jenal was no different, particularly with her many windows and skylights. Most were double glassed but the windows aluminium frames and the portholes steel & brass casings were great condensation makers. As well as transferors of cold.

'A' took guidance from fellow moored bargees and set about making secondary glassing panels from Perspex equivalent rather than plain acrylic; which has a tendency to be too brittle. The 5 skylights were the first candidates and this was achieved by using 10mm thick 2 panel reed separated sheeting (often used for house conservatory roofs). It was light-weight and gave a stiffness to the otherwise large floppy panels. Cut and neatly edged in a clear acrylic U shape. All held in place by colour-matched white self-adhesive Velcro, making for simple summer removal.

Foam insulation between secondary panels and metal window frame ensured cold & condensation did not transfer. And the window frame male Velcro left when the panels were removed made it easy to replace with fly-screen fabric.
